That’s because of you. All of you. I didn’t build my empire all willy-nilly like him or anyone. The guidance, encouragement, and shitposting I received in this forum molded me into the man I became today.

I owe far too much from Jalopnik and Oppositelock, and I can never repay that. Losing this place would not only mean losing my personal repository of random work finished and unfinished, it would mean losing the one and only internet community that gave a shit what I thought, what I said. Between 2014 and 2018 JalOppo was the only site I frequented; it replaced Facebook and I couldn’t be happier every time I visited. This pace was my refuge at a time when my aunt had a stroke and I was an aimless NEET with no idea what to do before turning 20. I treasure that, you, this site. I saw Kinja and Gawker change before my eyes, living and dying and living again, and niw potentially dying for good. That’s a vexing thought. I hate Facebook. I can’t be arsed to use Messenger. In this place at least, I belong.

So I can’t afford to lose this place. Univision should have worked. But now, more than ever, I can’t make another mistake. If no one wants to take GMG, I would. I’d fix Kinja (barely), hire back all the former writers, re-establish Splinter, find more talent from all over the Americas, Europe, India, Japan and ASEAN so it’s formidable enough to stand alone as an entity. And after I show the new folk the ropes and make them be part of the union, I’d leave you alone. It’s the least I can do to thank you. At worst I’ll send hit squads to take down everyone who fucked GMG up. But I’m only doing that after I’ve ensured the power vacuum is filled by the right people. Like Arch Duke or scoob.

I’m fighting for JalOppo. It’s a madcap idea, and my reasons border on selfish. But I won’t want to see this place die with a whimper like Toyota in 2016. If we die, we do it at Austin in a blaze of glorious diesel Volvo wagon and NA Miata sound. And if we live, it’s because we did it together. Also because they’re all dead and no one can hurt you anymore.

For now, I shall archive every post and draft I have.
